Akela

Welcome to Scouting with Pack 87!!! The information found on this sheet will help you get started in Scouting. (Confessions of first year scout parent)

The Scout rank you work towards is determined by your grade in school.

  • 1st grade - Tiger Cubs
  • 2nd grade - Wolf Scout
  • 3rd grade - Bear Scout
  • 4th grade - WeBeLoS Scout (1st year)
  • 5th grade - WeBeLoS Scout (2nd year)
  •  6th grade - 18 years old - Boy Scouts

Den Meetings - Are 2 times per month for one hour on a day and time determined by the den. During Den Meetings the scouts work on scout advancement, build art & craft projects, & have game time. Tiger Parents are required to attend den meetings.

Pack Meetings - Are held once each month and work around a theme. For example, October was It's a Circus of Stars and January is our Pinewood Derby Race. All parents, brothers, & sisters are invited to Pack Meeting. Pack Meetings are typically on the last Monday of the month in the multi-purpus room of Kingsley Elementary School. Meetings start at  6:45 and end at 8:00. Check the Calendar and the Pack Newsletter for additional  information.

Outings & Projects - Include our annual events; Camping, Pinewood Derby, Blue & Gold Banquet and Raingutter Regatta. Other outings include bowling, skating, football and baseball games and the occasional pizza party. We also have a tradition of service that currently includes food drives, toys for tots and the clean up of Ring Road near the school.
Our Pack Newsletter and  Calendar  will have information on these & other activities.

Books - Are the MOST IMPORTANT item to have right away. The books help your son advance in rank. Pick up the appropriate book as soon as possible and go through it with your son. There is a lot of fun to be found.  The reading levels match the grade of the scout but tiger cubs may need some help.

Uniforms - Scouts should have a uniform shirt. It is the way we show off our Scouts advancement. The local Scout supply stores should have everything you to get started. The shirts are heavy to a short sleeved shirt may be your best bet for Illinois weather.  When you buy the shirt, you will also need the white on red numbers "87" and a council patch. We are in the Three Fires Council. These go on the left sleeve. For the right sleeve. you will need U.S. flag and den numeral.  Finally, the neckerchief and slide, these are by rank. Orange for Tigers, yellow for Wolves, blue for Bears, & plaid for WeBeLoS. If you are not sure what goes where see your scout book or check out the uniform inspection sheets a 87 Kb PDF file.

Fees - The cost to enroll your Scout each year from March to February is currently $35.00. This fee is collected in early February.   Everything else is paid for with our only fund raiser,  the popcorn sale in fall.  Everyone is expected to participate.

Leaders - We are currently looking for parents who would like to help Pack 87 this year. Please talk to any of the Leaders if you can help out this year.

QUESTIONS ? - Contact the Cubmaster, talk to your Den Leader, or e-mail us.
